TransAsia Flight Down In Taiwan

Plane Clipped Bridge With Left Wing Before Going Down In The Keelung River

An ATR 72-600 operated by Taiwan's TransAsia Airways was involved in an accident Wednesday at around 1045 (local time) near Taipei Songshan airport (Taiwan). According to a statement from ATR released to the media, the flight GE235 was operating between Taipei and Kinmen with 58 people on board.

The aircraft, registered under B-22816, was MSN (Manufacturing Serial Number) 1141. There have been 26 confirmed fatalities, according to multiple media sources.

ATR said in the statement that the Aviation Safety Council of Taiwan will lead the investigation and will be the official source of information. According to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) regulations, ATR will advise the French Bureau d'Enquêtes et Analyses (BEA), safety investigation authority representing the State of the aircraft manufacturer.

Dramatic video of the accident was captured by several dashboard cams in cars on the bridge. Video shows the plane narrowly missing an apartment building before banking steeply left, with the left wing of the airplane striking the bridge. News video shows rescuers working to help survivors out of the wreckage, and some walking away.

TransAsia Airways CEO Chen Xinde told reporters that TransAsia Airways expressed its “deep apology to the victims and our crew.” ATR also express its deepest sympathy to the families, friends and to those affected by the accident.
