Aero-TV: Flight Tip of the Week – Randy Babbitt, A Mental Checkride

FAA Administrator Emphasizes Continued Focus on Pilot Professionalism

At the 2009 National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) convention, Randy Babbitt took to the stage to once again promote safety and professionalism in aviation.  With nearly 70,000 operations throughout the U.S. each day, and over 753 million people transported each year, Babbitt continues to place safety in the aviation workplace as his number one priority as FAA Administrator.

As a guest speaker at the NBAA Opening General Session, Babbitt explained the necessity of safety management systems (SMS) and placed further emphasis on pilot professionalism.

While the FAA cannot regulate professionalism, Babbitt encouraged strong professionals to step into mentoring positions in order to ensure continued safety. By continuing to grow a community of professionalism in the aviation workplace, safety can reach a new level within the industry.

Babbitt explained, “SMS will help us connect the dots with data, and professionalism and mentoring will help us to put it all to good use.  As safe as we are, we need to be safer still.  We need to accept the responsibility for making it happen.”  Babbitt took the opportunity to guide attendees through a mental checklist of professionalism.  Join Aero-TV as Babbitt challenges all aviators to reflect on the necessity of pilot professionalism.
