ANA DHC-8 Makes Emergency Landing In Japan

Cockpit, Cabin Fill With Smoke

An All-Nippon Airways DeHavilland DHC-8-Q400 made an emergency landing in Osaka Friday, after the cockpit and cabin filled with black smoke. No one was hurt, but it was yet another incident to scare Japanese passengers, who've watched with dismay other instances of mechanical or operational failures at both ANA and JAL.

Authorities said the smoke eminated from an air duct inside the cabin.

Safety concerns have plagued both ANA and JAL have sparked concern at Japan's Transport Ministry. As ANN reported in March, the minister himself ordered JAL to make corrections. JAL's CEO later resigned.

Similar safety concerns hover around ANA, but the country's focus remains on its flagship carrier. The Transport Ministry Friday order JAL to hire outside safety experts after two tires literally fell off a Japan Airlines aircraft at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Wednesday.
