'Know Before You Fly' Drone Education Campaign Expands

Consumer Technology Association Joins FAA, AUVSI and AMA In Effort To Educate Public On Drone Use

AUVSI and AMA, along with the FAA have confirmed that the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) has joined the UAS education campaign titled “Know Before You Fly.” This program provides prospective UAS operators with the information and guidance they need to fly safely and responsibly.

“Know Before You Fly” was founded in 2014 as a collaborative effort between industry and government to inform consumers and businesses about what they need to know before taking to the skies with a UAS, commonly referred to as a drone. The campaign includes a website , educational videos, a robust social media presence, and point-of-sale materials to ensure that prospective operators have the information and guidance on what they need to know before they fly a UAS.

CTA is America’s largest technology trade association representing an industry that supports more than 18 million U.S. jobs. This powerful organization, which counts brands from startups to leading technology companies and beyond among its members, strengthens the campaign’s capacity for outreach to the drone and non-drone communities.

"Today, every company is or needs to be a tech company - and more industries are discovering that drone technology can be a game-changer, "said Doug Johnson, CTA Vice President, Technology Policy. “From the agriculture and energy to the retail and entertainment sectors, drones are delivering more innovative, more efficient ways of doing business. And we're excited to join these groups on such an important mission."

“Over the past six years, ‘Know Before You Fly’ has educated countless new UAS operators on the safe operational requirements of their aircraft before they have taken to the air,” said AUVSI president and CEO Brian Wynne. “The campaign has been a great success to date, and having CTA on board with us ensures we will continue to grow our outreach capacity as the market continues to expand with civil, commercial and recreational flyers.”

The Academy of Model Aeronautics, founded in 1936, serves as the nation’s collective voice for approximately 175,000 modelers and 2,400 clubs in the United States and Puerto Rico. Headquartered in Muncie, Indiana, AMA is a membership organization representing those who fly model aircraft for recreational and educational purposes. Know Before You Fly is part of the organization’s ongoing commitment to educating hobbyists and recognizing the growing interest in flying model aircraft and drones.
