'Save Nelson Airport' in High Gear

Historic, Useful BC Airport Threatened With Closure

Jaye and Scott, ANN News-Spies, told us, "Here we go again. this airport is a jewel, and the city is like something out of a history book. Steve Martin's movie, Roxanne, was filmed there and gives a good feel for the place.

Nelson Airport is under very real threat of closure by the early part of 2004. The Nelson City Council, in its wisdom, believes that some quick real estate profit is worth the complete loss of one of the most interesting small airports in the country. This wonderful little airport, nestled under sight of the Kokanee Glacier and with a history of 50 years is about to go under to some short-term gain real estate deal.

The folks working locally to save the airport wrote, "The best way to have any chance of stopping this steamroller would be from hundreds and hundreds of emails, faxes or letters or even phone calls. We urge anyone who has ever been here, or is contemplating a flight to this beautiful area, to email their feelings to the Mayor and members of council, with a copy to the local newspapers as well. This way both the council and local media may get an idea of interest. Of special importance would be any money spent or invested in Nelson so that the City Council may get an idea of the hidden dollars that we pilots know airports bring in local areas. Please do not sit back and think "oh well, at least I still have a good local airport." It could as easily happen in your area with current short-sighted interest evidenced by our politicians. I would hope we would then come to your support as indeed Flynorth has done on several occasions."

They'd like our help:

Contact info-- it would be good to email the Mayor with copies to both newspapers.

The Mayor is Mr. David Elliot. The Mayor and Council: clerk@city.nelson.bc.ca
You can write to the Mayor at
City Hall, 502 Vernon St.
Nelson, BC V1L 5P4
Canada

Nelson Daily News, Nelson's only daily paper: news@nelsondailynews.com
The Express Weekly local --email: express@expressnews.bc.ca

I would request a blind copy to SaveNelsonAirport@flynorth.com as well, using the "bcc" option so we can keep track of letters. Thanks for your support.
