VoltAero Begins Certification Tests on Electric-Hybrid Cassio 330

Cassio 330 Hybrid Enters Certification Tests

VoltAero, a pioneering force in electric aviation, has commenced certification testing for the innovative electric-hybrid powertrain of its Cassio 330 aircraft.

This testing phase marks a crucial step in the development of the Cassio e-aircraft family, specifically tailored for the five-seat Cassio 330. The testing is conducted on a ground-based bench that simulates real-world conditions, using components designated for the final production model.

The Cassio 330's powertrain features a unique combination of Safran Electrical & Power's ENGINeUS™ 100 smart electric motor and a high-performance thermal engine from Kawasaki, derived from the renowned Ninja® motorcycle. This setup delivers a total power output of 330 kilowatts, with the electric motor contributing 180 kilowatts and the Kawasaki engine providing the remaining 150 kilowatts.

Jean Botti, CEO and Chief Technology Officer of VoltAero, emphasized the significance of this phase in their long-term vision. "Our rigorous full-scale testing of the Cassio 330's powertrain underlines our dedication to advancing a new generation of electric-hybrid aircraft, marrying our bespoke powertrain with an aerodynamically optimized airframe," Botti stated.

The tests are carried out at AKIRA Technologies in Bayonne, France, building on previous successes. The Cassio 330's powertrain architecture has already proven its efficacy in flight tests using VoltAero's Cassio S testbed airplane. This aircraft, equipped with a 600-kilowatt version of the powertrain, has completed over 230 flights, covering 15,000 kilometers and landing at more than 40 airports.

VoltAero's innovative approach integrates the electric motor within the aft fuselage, enabling all-electric operation for taxiing, takeoff, primary flight for short distances, and landing. The hybrid component, featuring the internal combustion engine, functions as both a range extender and a backup system, recharging the batteries during flight and enhancing reliability.

The Cassio 330 design incorporates a sleek fuselage, a forward fixed canard, and an aft-set wing with twin booms supporting a high-set horizontal tail, all optimized for performance and efficiency. VoltAero plans to follow up with larger models, including the six-seat Cassio 480 and the 10/12-seat Cassio 600, expanding the utility of this family for various applications from regional commercial flights to air taxi services and emergency medical evacuations.

VoltAero has set a target for the Cassio 330's certification by late 2025, poised to offer a revolutionary product that promises significantly reduced operational costs and enhanced performance compared to existing competitors.
