A4A Joins 'Know Before You Fly' UAV Campaign

Hopes To Promote Safe And Responsible Integration Of UAVs Into The NAS

Airline industry group Airlines For America (A4A) has joined the "Know Before You Fly" campaign to promote awareness and safety for unmanned aircraft flights.

The association said in a recent blog post that the future of aviation undoubtedly includes UAS, remotely piloted aircraft often referred to as drones. That said, it is important to remember that airspace is shared space – U.S. airlines alone operate nearly 30,000 flights per day – and it is imperative that safety remains the number one priority for all of us.

"A4A continues to work closely with the FAA to ensure that UAS are safely and responsibly integrated into the national airspace in a timely manner but without any detrimental effects on current aviation operations," the association said.

The FAA limits drone use to less than 400 feet and not within five miles of an airport. Recently there have been reports of drones that broke both of those regulations, sighted at altitudes ranging from 1,300 to 9,000 feet near various airports across the country.

To promote awareness and safety for unmanned aircraft users, A4A supports the FAA and other industry leaders. The Know Before You Fly campaign provides facts and guidance on how to be responsible when operating a drone.
