Hornet Down In Central California

Two Aboard Unable To Eject, Fatally Injured

A Navy F/A-18F Hornet went down Wednesday afternoon near Naval Air Station Lemoore in Central California, fatally injuring the two people on board.

The plane went down in an agricultural area near Fresno, according to Navy officials. Naval Air Forces Coronado spokesperson Cmdr. Pauline Storum told Gannett News Services that she had not been informed whether the aircrew had radioed that they were having problems, or whether they attempted to eject before the jet went down.

The names of the aircrew were being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Hornet was on a routine training mission when the accident occurred. The Navy is continuing an internal investigation.

NAS Lemoore is the Navy's West Coast Master Jet Base, and home to several squadrons assigned to West Coast aircraft carriers.
