Airborne 06.12.20: CERTIFIED Electric Pipistrel, Airflow eSTOL, 2020 AMA Nats

Also: Shadin Approved on R66, DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase, CAP Buys More Cessnas, 400th V-22 Osprey

Though expected several months ago, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency has finally announced the certification of an electric airplane, the Pipistrel Velis Electro, the first type certification world-wide of a fully electric aircraft and an important milestone in the quest for environmentally sustainable aviation.

The Velis Electro is a two-seater aircraft intended primarily for pilot training. Slovenia-based Pipistrel is a leading small aircraft designer and manufacturer, specialised in energy-efficient and affordable high-performance aircraft. The Velis Electro joins a product line-up of similar, but conventionally powered, aircraft. Airflow is developing their first electric Short Take-Off and Landing (eSTOL) aircraft designed for middle-mile logistics. Airflow’s aerial logistics network can move short-haul cargo quickly and cost-effectively over traffic by utilizing the unused airspace around cities. Five former Airbus Vahana team members, who have over 60 years of combined aerospace experience, started Airflow when they determined eSTOL aircraft could address the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) market for one-third the operating cost of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. We've been reporting on cancellation after cancellation... so it's an uncommon pleasure to report that a major aviation event, albeit a model aviation event, is set to proceed as planned. After careful deliberation, the AMA Executive Council has agreed to not cancel the 2020 Outdoor Nats. This decision is aligned with state and federal guidelines for events concerning COVID-19. The 2020 AMA Nats will take place to the extent that individual Nats organizers plan and conduct their respective events. Additional safety measures will be in place to protect members, staff, and community. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
