United Airlines Hauls Back On Routes

United Airlines Continues To Haul Back On Some International Routes

United Airlines is selectively culling some long-haul routes, for the month of June 2022 only…well…that’s the story for now, but this may be the continuation of more fits and starts before they eventually, if ever, find their footing on regularly scheduled operations to previously served destinations.

Presently, the affected routes are those from Newark-NY to Honolulu, Maui, Japan, and from Dulles-DC to Brazil, Honolulu, Ireland, and Switzerland, routes, that appear to use some of the 52 Boeing 777-200 series of aircraft that run on the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. You may recall that over a year ago, in February 2021, one of their flights, UA328 from Denver (DEN) to Honolulu (NHL) shed some components from the right engine shortly after takeoff! There was some property damage, but thankfully no fatalities during the arrival of the unexpected lawn ornaments.

United Airlines has been riding a roller-coaster since the arrival of COVID-19 as has everyone else in the industry. In March 2020 they announced suspending some long-haul routes after helping to repatriate US citizens as the pandemic raged, and they sought to “aggressively manage” those effects [of COVID-19].

They later cut flights in December 2021 after some 3,000 of their employees ‘called in sick’, and went so far as to offer triple pay to pilots willing to pick up trips. Until then, passengers will have to seek other transportation choices, loyalty and mileage programs aside.
