CH-47 Down: Afghanistan

ELT Sounds, Rescuers En Route

ANN REAL-TIME NEWS: 1730 EDT -- Military personnel and equipment were making best possible speed Tuesday night en route to the crash site where a CH-47 Chinook helicopter went down west of Asadabad. The aircraft carried a crew of at least three and as many as 16 soldiers.

Military officials told CNN the aircraft was carrying soldiers to the area "in support of US forces currently conducting counter-terrorism operations," according to a written statement. "US fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters are currently providing close air support to the forces on the ground," the Coalition Press Information Center of the Combined Forces Command statement said, quoted by CNN.

This CH-47 mishap was the second since April, when 13 soldiers and three contractors went down in a Chinook crash near the town of Ghazni as it was returning to Bagram Air Base near Kabul.

In neither case has the military indicated a cause for the accident.
