Sequester Forces Cancellation Of Abilene AirFest

But Air Race Will Continue As Planned

The organizers of the Big Country AirFest event in Abilene, TX, say they are being forced to cancel the public air show part of the event, but that a planned SARL-Sanctioned air race will go on as scheduled.

The public air show cancellation was laid at the feet of the sequester by the event's organizers. Gary Bridwell, founding AirFest Chairman and a memeber of the organizing committee, told the Abilene Reporter News that the group tried to keep the event on track, but that federal budget cuts affecting Dryess Air Force Base and the Air Forces' participation in civilian air shows, it was just not feasible to hold the show this year.

Bridwell said that vendors that have made arrangements in advance will receive a full refund.

However, the committee said that private pilot fly-in events and an SARL-sanctioned air race that are planned for the weekend of May 3-4 will proceed as scheduled.

On its website, the organizers of the Big Country AirFest say "stay tuned for details on AirFest 2014."
