World's Biggest Little Airport Open In Germany

Miniatur Wunderland Celebrates Grand Opening Of Model Airport

There won't be any daily operations out of Knuffingen Airport, because the entire grounds only encompass about 1,600 square feet. But visitors to Miniatur Wunderand in Hamburg, Germany can tour what may be the most detailed model airport in existence.

Knuffingen Airport, loosely based on Hamburg Airport, boasts some 40 model aircraft, 90 vehicles, and some 15,000 tiny people, according to Australia's News.com.au. And the London Daily Mail reports that the aircraft do fly ... suspended from a wire ... around the patch.

The Miniatur Wunderland website says creation of the airport took more than 150,000 man hours over six years at a cost of about $5 million. The attraction offers behind-the-scenes tours of the model, including all the mechanism that make the airplanes "fly" and the tiny vehicles move around the airport.
