Civilian Passenger Ejected From Rafale Jet On Observation Flight

Unnamed Passenger Suffer Back Injuries But Survived

A civilian passenger aboard a French Rafale military jet was injured in March when his ejection seat activated during the flight, sending him through the canopy of the aircraft.

The website BGR cites a report from Aerotime which indicates that the 64-year-old passenger, who has not been identified, was on an observation flight which originated at Saint-Dizier air base when the incident occurred. The ejection seat blasted the man through the canopy and away from the aircraft before deploying its parachute.

The passenger survived the unexpected ejection, but reportedly suffered back injuries during the landing. The pilot managed to return the Rafale to the base and land safely.

The French military has grounded some of its Rafale airplanes as it conducts a safety review to determine why the ejection seat triggered. They will look at whether the incident was caused by some human error or a mechanical malfunction.
