Romanian MiG-21 Struck By 'UFOs'

Pilot Says Objects Came From Under The Clouds

It was a close encounter of a most unusual kind... but what, exactly, caused it? Officials with the Romanian Defense Ministry announced recently one of their MiG-21s was struck by several unidentified flying object last October.

UPI reports at least four UFOs allegedly struck the MiG-21 Lancer during an October 31 check-out flight (yes, Halloween) but the plane was able to land safely. According to the India Times, the objects hit the plane at an altitude of 6,300 meters, or just under 20,700 feet, below an overcast cloud layer.

The man tasked with investigating the incident, Lt. Col. Nicolae Grigorie, claims a video camera onboard the aircraft caught "two solid bodies, which are not translucid" strike the fighter. "They couldn't be birds because there are no birds in Europe able to fly so high," he said. "And they couldn't be ice bodies because it was a clear sky -- neither could they be pieces of another plane or a meteor."

No organic matter was found on the aircraft, further ruling out a bird strike. No civilian flights were anywhere near the fighter when it came in contact with the mysterious objects 6 km from the town of Gherla, and officials say no artillery or other manmade objects were in the area at the time.

"We can say with certainty what was not, but not what it was -- an object that struck the MIG -- but we do not know what material was or origin," Grigorie said.
