Laser Aimed At UK Medical Helicopter

Aircraft Was Transporting A Patient, No Suspects

Someone pointed a laser beam at a medical helicopter transporting an injured driver to the hospital over Warwick in the U.K. last Monday, and authorities have no leads in the incident.

The helicopter was flying at more than 1,200 feet with the injured van driver on board when it was hit by the laser beam. The BBC reports that, according to trauma doctor Nick Crombie, the pilot, whom he described as very experienced, dealt with the unexpected light in the cockpit, but that it could have led to temporary blindness and loss of spacial awareness.

Midlands Air Ambulance, which owns the aircraft, said it would prosecute the person who aimed the laser at the helicopter if he or she is caught.

Despite the laser incident, the crew safely delivered the badly-injured driver to University Hospital in Coventry and Warwickshire.
