Pilot Taken To Hospital After Accident In Waihi Beach
Around 1:00 pm local time on August 14th, a Tecnam P2002 Sierra crashed into a parked Vans RV-4. The Police and Fire Departments were notified at 1:11 pm, and the Tecnam pilot was taken to a local hospital.
The accident occurred at the Waihi Beach Airfield in Athenree, New Zealand. This is a private airstrip operated and managed by the Waihi Beach Flyers.
The pilot of the Tecnam Sierra was attempting to take off when they lost control and collided with the parked aircraft. Only the pilot was on board, and the RV-4 was unoccupied. An unnamed viewer of the accident stated: "It has attempted to take off but hasn't left the ground and run into another plane… Everybody is safe”
According to Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern shift manager Michael Anderson, four fire trucks, one vehicle from Mayor View and Waihi fire brigade, two ambulances, and one rapid response vehicle rushed to the scene. The pilot was then taken to the Tauranga Hospital in “moderate” condition. No other injury information is currently available.
Most of the vehicles were told to stand down shortly after the pilot was transported, but two trucks remained on the scene to ensure the area was safe.
The Civil Aviation Authority has been made aware of the accident. A spokesperson commented, “In the coming days, we’ll make inquiries to understand what has happened and determine if any further CAA action is required."
