Airbus Names Evrard To Oversee A350XWB Project

Comes From EADS Missile Development Program

More signs of progress for Airbus Industrie's revised A350XWB airliner... as the European planemaker Thursday chose Didier Evrard to oversee the airliner's development program. Evrard is the 53-year-old head of a missile development program for parent company EADS, and starts his new duties immediately.

Bloomberg reports EADS expects to spend about $15.4 billion developing three versions of the A350XWB. That includes some equipment which will be used for future models.

Airbus already reports orders from 10 new customers for the A350, even while its planned configuration has morphed from a modified A330-derived design, to an entirely new, composite-bodied aircraft.

Orders placed for the original configuration remain subject to confirmation.

The A350XWB is an attempt by Airbus to come up with an answer to Boeing's 787 Dreamliner. The project is launching at a time when its big brother, the A380 super-jumbo, is two years behind its original schedule.

Studies by Airbus indicate the market for medium-sized aircraft is worth $60 billion annually.
