USAF Lowers Expectations for F/A-22 Fleet

Original plans were for 381 aircraft, now adjusted to 290

The Reuters news service is reporting that the US Air Force has lowered their plans for the purchase of the F/A-22 Raptor fighter jets, from an original planned fleet size of 381 to an adjusted plan for 290 aircraft.

"We've have always said that we need 381. We're on target right now to give us something in the neighborhood of 290 throughout 2012," Marvin Sambur, acquisitions chief for the U.S. Air Force, said at the Reuters Air and Defense Summit.

"We haven't been given the budget to reach the goal," Sambur said. "We have to make that case." Sambur also added that when it comes to the need for the jet, the plans have not changed.

"We obviously have this as our first priority," said Sambur. "Our goal here is air dominance."
