Poland To Exhume Remains Of President, Others Fatally Injured In Accident

Officials Hope Examining Remains Will Help Determine The Cause Of The Accident

Polish officials plan to exhume the remains of President Lech Kaczynski (pictured), his wife, and some others who were aboard an airplane that went down in heavy fog in April 2010, resulting in the fatal injury of all 96 people on board.

The Associated Press reports that Prosecutor Maciej Kujawski said that autopsy documents received from Russia, where the accident occurred, are incomplete and in some cases contain errors. He also said they do not give any clues as to the cause of the accident. The bodies were returned to Poland in sealed coffins, and were not examined when they were repatriated.

The new investigation stems from a probe initiated by the leadership of Poland's Law and Justice Party led by President Kaczynski’s twin brother, Jaroslaw. The group says that the accident may have actually been an assassination of the President caused by explosives placed on the aircraft by operatives in Poland and Russia. Investigators say they have taken that hypothesis into account.

No date has been set for the exhumation of the bodies.
