UK Wants Emission Tax On Aviation

Tough Break, Old Chap...

If lawmakers in Britain have their way, flying throughout Europe will soon be MUCH more expensive.

The London Sunday Telegraph reports Tony Blair's administration -- which controls the rotating presidency of the entire European Union through the end of the year -- will introduce legislation to penalize airlines whose planes emit more than the permitted amount of pollutants.

The move would roll the country's commercial airlines into a controversial emissions-trading scheme -- using fees collected from airlines whose planes emit above the permitted levels of polluntants, to offset the costs of reducing carbon (through methods such as planting trees) throughout the EU.

Those fees, of course, would be passed on to customers. Reports indicate such charges could end up doubling the fares on many low-cost airlines across the pond.

So far, there's been no reaction from the airlines themselves -- but wait for it. It's coming.
