Italian Government Fines Ryanair Over $4 Million

Charges That Low-Cost Airline Did Little To Assist Passengers Stranded During Volcanic Activity

Discount airline Ryanair has been fined over $4 million by the Italian government for failing to do enough for passengers stranded during the early days of the travel disruptions caused by the Icelandic volcano.

The Italian government says Ryanair did not provide stranded passengers in Rome with food, drinks or hotel rooms. The Italian civil aviation authority noted 178 cases in which Ryanair failed to follow EU rules governing assistance to stranded passengers, and that its own staff wound up helping people who's flights were cancelled.

ABC News reports that at first, Ryanair told passengers it would only refund tickets, but eventually capitulated and said it would abide by the EU's rules.  The airline has had no comment of the Italian fine.
