One Killed When Two Small Planes Collide In Arizona

One Aircraft Made A Safe Emergency Landing

One person on board a Cessna 150 was killed and another severely injured after a mid-air collision in Coolidge, Arizona. The Cessna collided with a Piper Cherokee, which made a safe emergency landing about two miles away.

Multiple sources report the FAA has confirmed that the two people aboard the Cessna were students at the Air Safety Flight Academy of Glendale, a Phoenix-area flight school. The school also leased the plane. It had departed Marana Regional Airport near Tucson, and was headed to Glendale Municipal Airport, according to FAA Spokesman Ian Gregor.

One witness near the accident scene said he saw the Cessna spinning with one wing and the tail both separated from the aircraft. Another told a local television station that the person who died in the accident either jumped or was thrown from the damaged plane about 75 feet in the air.

The Cherokee was also badly damaged, but managed to land safely in a field about two miles from where the accident occurred. The Cherokee is registered to Oxford Airline Training Center out of Goodyear, Arizona. Both people aboard that aircraft appeared to be unhurt.
