Chuck Yeager Sues Airbus For Copyright Infringement

Claims They Used His Name And Likeness Without Permission

Chuck Yeager, who famously became the first pilot to break the sound barrier in 1947, has sued Airbus, saying the European planemaker used his name and likeness without permission while promoting their Racer high-speed helicopter.

Insurance Journal reports that Yeager, now 97, filed the suit last Wednesday. The complaint stems from a piece which appeared on the Airbus website in June, 2017 in which Guillaume Faury, now Airbus’ CEO and at the time was Airbus Helicopters’ chief executive, as saying “Seventy years ago, Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier,” and Airbus was now “trying to break the cost barrier. It cannot be ‘speed at any cost.'”

Yeager said that Airbus has infringed on his trademark and wrongly appropriated his right of publicity through "fraudulent" conduct. He says Airbus deceived the public into thinking he endorsed the piece.

Airbus would not comment on pending litigation. Yeager is seeking unspecified damages and restitution in the suit, which was filed in federal court in Santa Ana, CA.
