ANN FAQ: What's With The Tiny Pictures?

Larger Images Merely One Click Away

In order to conserve bandwidth and allow our users to see our website (please note that this does NOT apply to the HTML or PDF newsletter -- we do not yet offer that function in the newsletters) as quickly as possible, ANN publishes all of the pictures and graphics accompanying our stories in a default 100 pixel-wide "thumbnail" format. This format helps balance the need to preserve image clarity, while also saving valuable resources and bandwidth.

As was covered in a previous FAQ that concerned viewing options for ANN's Top News page, our readers can select the options of displaying fullsized graphics, and even no graphics at all -- but again, we can't imagine who would want read our stories WITHOUT pictures (don't make us use the Hugh Hefner comparison again!)

The best compromise (and most popular user selection by far) is to show pictures and graphics as thumbnails within each story. This allows our site to load onto slower computers almost as quickly as it would without ANY graphics at all, while making sure our stories are visually interesting, as well as informative to read.

But don't worry: choosing thumbnails doesn't mean you now need to squint to see our pictures. Through the wonders of modern technology, all you need to do is click on the thumbnail of any picture, graphic, TFR depiction... ANY graphic on our site, and the fullsize image will then open in a new window... such as this.

Go ahead... try it!
