Airborne-Unmanned 06.10.20: FAA UAS Symposium, Predator Over MN, Laser v Drone

Also: MultiGP's IO2020 Postponed, Ehang Granted Approval, Saker-1C, ND UAS BVLOS Network

As previously reported; the FAA and AUVSI have announced the two-part virtual event for the revised FAA UAS Symposium – Remotely Piloted Edition. Episodes I and II, will take place on July 8 to 9 and August 18 to 19, 2020.

The FAA is promoting some positive messaging this year... stating that, “Registering and flying your drone has never been easier — or safer. The FAA has cut the red tape and increased efficiencies by streamlining our processes and providing online access to them. Learn all about how we’ve increased our customer service efforts through live, interactive webinars, video tutorials, and social media.” Episode I is scheduled for July 8 to 9 with a focus on UAS traffic management (UTM) and international UAS integration. A number of sources created a bit of a fuss when they noted that a CBP Predator was operating over Minneapolis during recent riots and other unrest. An Investigative journalist, Jason Paladino (@jason_paladino), was one of the first to provide substantive detail, by tweeting, "NOW: @CBP Predator Drone #CPB104 circling over Minneapolis at 20K feet. Took off from Grand Forks Air Force Base." Amphibious transport dock ship USS Portland (LPD 27) successfully disabled a UAV with a Solid State Laser - Technology Maturation Laser Weapon System Demonstrator (LWSD) MK 2 MOD 0 on May 16. LWSD is a high-energy laser weapon system demonstrator developed by the Office of Naval Research and installed on the Portland for an at-sea demonstration. LWSD's operational employment on a Pacific Fleet ship is the first system-level implementation of a high-energy class solid-state laser. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
