U.S. Army Flying Drones In Concert With Apache Helicopters

Air Cavalry Soldiers Using Unmanned Aircraft For Target Spotting

The U.S. Army 4th Combat Aviation Brigade currently conducting exercises in Europe is pairing their AH-64D Apache helicopters with RQ-7 Shadow drones for target spotting.

Stars and Stripes reports that in exercises held Wednesday, the 17th Cavalry Regiment used the UAVs to spot targets from above, then used lasers to direct the helicopters to those targets.

“This training shows that the squadron is fully operational and ready to conduct missions as part of [Operation] Atlantic Resolve,” 4th CAB spokesman Capt. Edward Putzier said.

The 4th CAB arrived in Europe last month for a 9-month deployment as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a mission to deter Russian aggression. The operation began shortly after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
