EAA Warns About Potentially Bogus Airplane Renewal Notices

Owners Receiving Solicitations For Unnecessary Paid Services

EAA is warning its members to regard any solicitation they may receive regarding aircraft registration renewal that does not come directly from the FAA with a healthy dose of suspicion. EAA is aware of several businesses — with names, web URLs, and logos that may appear reminiscent of a government agency — that notify aircraft owners of impending registration expiration and direct them to a website or mail-in form where they can renew in exchange for a hefty fee.

Oklahoma Company And Owner Sentenced For Operating Illegal Charter Flights

Flights Took Place Between May 2014 And July 2016

On November 13, James Paul Johnson and his company, Interstate Helicopters, Inc. (Interstate Helicopters), Bethany, OK, pleaded guilty and were sentenced in U.S. District Court, Oklahoma City, OK with failure to make a record to FAA. Johnson was sentenced to a $5,000 fine and $5 special assessment, and Interstate Helicopters was sentenced to a $45,000 fine and a $125 special assessment. Both were charged via information on November 2, 2018.

A Florida man on vacation in Switzerland nearly lost his life when he nearly fell from a hang glider during a sightseeing flight recently. Chris Gursky was a passenger on the hang glider. Fox News reports that his harness was not properly attached to the frame of the aircraft, and he was left dangling by his bare hands some 4,000 feet above the scenery he was supposed to be enjoying.

FAA InFO Clarifies Master Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) Requirements

Agency Finds Operators Have Been Exercising MEL Relief For STC Components Not Yet Evaluated Through The FOEB Process

FAA guidance requires that components, systems, or appliances installed on an aircraft under an STC be included in the MMEL before approval for inclusion in an operator’s MEL is allowed. Before inclusion in the MMEL, the Flight Operations Evaluation Board (FOEB) must evaluate an STC for such relief. The STC holder/applicant should request an FOEB evaluation as early as possible during the certification process.
