Computer Glitch Grounds American And US Airways

It's the sound airline dispatchers dread.

BZZZZZZT.

When that sound is followed by a blank or locked-up computer screen, you can bet it's going to be awhile before dispatchers get any rest.

Such was the case Sunday, when Texas-based EDS computers went down, grounding American Airlines and US Airways across the country.

"It appears to be unintentional user error," said Jeff Baum, a spokesman for EDS in Plano (TX). Just who's error remains to be seen.

The FAA said both airlines asked for help communicating the problem to aircraft on the ground.

US Airways said the computer problem originated in one of its flight operations databases. A similar problem plagued American. When EDS saw the problems, said Baum, it took both operations offline.
