Aero-TV At OSH21: Let's Talk Parachute Recovery Systems

CEO & President Of Aviation Safety Resources Speaks With ANN

Larry Williams, CEO & President, Aviation Safety Resources, takes some time to discuss upcoming projects with ANN on the second day of OshKosh and share the company's excitement for the reveal of the development of their parachute canopy.

“The real progress factor for us is the fact that we focus very heavily on making sure that we can develop this next generation of recovery systems,” Williams says.

“We originally started out looking at the vertical take-off and landing market and through the testing and development what we realized was there was an opportunity to make significant developments over the existing products that are out there today,” Williams explained. “Namely, reducing weight, reducing cost, but most importantly we have developed a parachute canopy, that's never been done before, that will open about 40% faster than any competitor products that are out there today. What that means is that you can open it at a lower level and that will result ultimately in saving more lives,” Williams continued.

Williams says that in the development of new airplanes, it is highly desired to have recovery systems on board.

“You need to have a recovery system. We had a very large company that told us that they lost 30% of their market shares simply because they did not have a recovery system on board. So back fifteen years ago when it was very resistant to the market, now that market has embraced that. We see that overall, and we are testament to that, but the truth is there is room for improvement,” he says.

The future for ASR will for sure be in the vertical take-off and landing market, so they are focusing on lower opening canopies. The company is open to defense contracts and believes that its three principal ideas of lower cost, lower weight, and faster opening time can apply across the market, in many different categories.
