Indiana Couple Lost In Accident Near Son's Home

Investigators Look To Weather As Possible Factor

FAA and NTSB investigators are on the scene of a single-engine plane crash in a remote, swampy area of southern Georgia, about 50 miles southwest of Savannah.

The crash claimed the life of an Indiana doctor and his wife. Investigators believe their private plane, type unreported, encountered bad weather and crashed Wednesday night.

The victims are identified as Dr. Om Prakash Rehil and his wife, Raji, of Marion, IN.

Their aircraft went about six miles west of Liberty County Regional Airport. Witnesses reported hearing a plane in distress about 2000 EDT Wednesday. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter discovered the crash site about 1100 EDT Thursday.

A fire department spokesman says the flight originated in Anderson, SC, bound for Hinesville, GA. Long County/Ludowici Fire Chief Darrell Ballance says the couple was intent on seeing their son and their brand new grandchild.

Their son, Vikas Rehil, was waiting at the airport at the time of the accident.
