Wayne Municipal Airport In NE Extensively Damaged By Tornado

EF4 Storm Tore Through The Airfield Friday

A powerful EF4 tornado caused extensive damage at Wayne Municipal Airport in Wayne, NE Friday, when the 1.38-mile-wide storm touched down with winds in excess of 170 miles per hour.

Authorities say the storm damaged at least two farms before coming up on an industrial park and then the airport. They said that it missed the downtown and residential districts but did damage a softball complex on the southeast side of the city, according to radio station KTIC.

Two hangars at the airport were "flattened" by the storm according to witnesses, and numerous airplanes were damaged or destroyed. Photographs posted by the station on its website bear out that description.

About 15 people were injured in the storm.
