Lufthansa Pilots To Stage One-Day Strike Wednesday

Latest Action In Long-Running Pay Dispute

Lufthansa Airlines pilots are planning a 24-hour strike on Wednesday beginning at midnight local time. The strike is the latest job action in a long-running pay dispute between pilots and the airline.

Buying Business Travel reports that the strike will only affect Lufthansa flights. Those operated by CityLine, Germanwings, SWISS, and other associated carriers will fly as scheduled.

The Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) labor union, which represents most Lufthansa pilots, said the offer of a 2.5 percent increase from the airline is not "adequate" given the increases in compensation of up to 30 percent for executives and board members. “The VC regrets the impact on the passengers, cabin crew and ground staff concerned,” it said in a statement.

Lufthansa says it has offered mediation to the union to work out their differences, but VC has spurned that offer. “Unfortunately, this strike brings many inconveniences for our customers, for which Lufthansa is apologizing in advance,” the airline said in a statement.
