FAA Reports Weather Delays Almost Doubled

Say, what's up, up there?

The summer is barely underway and already, it's the worst year for weather-related flight delays since 1999.

The FAA reports, in May, about 50,000 out of some two million scheduled flights in the US were delayed and that three-quarters of those delays were weather related.

Blame the heat, says the Washington Post.

The newspaper reports temperatures we don't normally see until July or August baked much of the country in May. Higher temperatures can, under the right conditions, lead to more severe storms.

Ironically, the weather delays come just as the commercial airline industry is enjoying its busiest summer in four years. Instead of raking in the profits, the airlines are forking out bigger chunks of change for delay-related overtime, displaced passenger lodging and the like.
