Europe, Asia: We Want In

Space Agency Reps Testify Before Space Commission

Apparently caught up in President Bush's vision of a lunar colony and a manned mission to Mars by 2030, European and Asian space agencies made it plain earlier this week: They want in.

"Space exploration is a global undertaking," said European Space Agency Director Daniel Sacotte.

Kiyoshi Higuchi, who heads up the Japanese Space Agency JAXA, told the President's Commission on Moon, Mars and Beyond that his country plans to launch an unmanned lunar probe -- one that could go hand-in-hand with American plans to use robotic rovers on the moon.

The president's commission has conducted a series of five public hearings around the country. This week's two-day confab was the last of those meetings. The commission has until June to make its recommendations to the White House.
