Sonex Highwing Takes Maiden Flight

Plane Maker Shifts to Collecting Performance Data as Testing Progresses

Sonex Aircraft’s first high-wing design took its first flight on Monday, June 30, reporting solid engine and aircraft performance… with room for a couple of minor adjustments. Flights will soon continue for the plane maker to collect and publish its first set of numbers.

The maiden flight, piloted by Sonex Advisory Board member Joe Norris, was kept short and sweet due to a minor passenger-side door latch issue. Overall, however, Norris reported that aircraft performance came as expected, engine temperatures were within limits, and only slight rigging adjustments were identified for future test flights.

The Sonex Highwing is the company’s first venture into a high-wing configuration. Designed to serve both utility and recreational missions, the aircraft features a lightweight aluminum structure and takes power from a 130-horsepower UL Power UL350iS engine. This powerplant runs on both Avgas and 97/98 Mogas and has been modified for a higher compression ratio. The prototype’s empty weight is a modest 816 pounds.

The company will now shift its focus to flight testing and data collection, including performance specs that will be published in the coming weeks. Future flights will also include the installation of wheel pants and gear leg fairings to finalize aerodynamic evaluations.

Development progress leading up to the first flight included finalizing the wing skinning, completing the outboard wing panels, and installing ailerons and flaps. Fairings for the metal flap roots are still in progress.

Other recent updates include a revised throttle quadrant, a completed fuel system, and wiring for the headset jack. The prototype now features machined door hinges and a basic release handle, replacing the original lanyard-style concept. Tooling for the windshield has been developed and test formations show minimal waste, though the process is still being refined.

The new high-wing model adds a utility-centered option to the Sonex lineup and is expected to be a popular choice for backcountry and recreational pilots seeking high visibility, simple construction, and solid performance in a two-seat platform.
