Cypriot Authorities Raid Helios Offices

Looking For Evidence In Greek Tragedy

ANN REAL TIME NEWS UPDATE: 1515 EDT -- The top law officer in Cyprus, Attorney General of the Republic Petros Clerides, issued search warrants Monday aimed at Helios Airways. This, after Sunday's crash of a Helios 737 bound from Larnaca to Athens, then on to Prague.

ANN Contributor Nathan Morley is in Cyprus. By clicking here, you can listen to his report.

"After the charges by Minister of Communications and Works and the Chief of Police, the Attorney General of the Republic has concluded it was necessary to issue warrants for search in the premises of Helios in order to attain documents or any other evidence which might be useful in the investigation of the possibility of penal offenses", Marios Karoyan, director of the President's Press Office said late Monday.

The raid came after a day of increasing tensions on Cyprus, where victims' relatives berated the airline for not releasing passenger information fast enough.

The airline has offered families of the victims 13,000 pounds (approximately $23,500). It wasn't immediately clear how many families, if any, had accepted.

Helios executives, in the meantime, denied that their flights were grounded and issued a lengthy apology on their web site.
