Aero-TV: The UMS F-720 -- Building a UAS Around Sensors

Exploring Innovative Military And Civilian UAV Platforms At AUVSI 2014

ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell attended the 2014 convention of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and talked with Phil Hoole, the Business Development Director for UMS.

Jim’s first question was to ask for information about their new F-720 drone.

Hoole said the F-720 is something they have been working on for about 3 years. He described the development process as starting with the aircraft itself and then adapting the control platform to the aircraft to suit the mission. This drone is developed with the capability of simply removing the nose section of the aircraft and installing whatever software and sensor system is needed for the mission.

The F-720 has a definite military application but Hoole also said they are aiming at the commercial market in many areas of operation. Because the sensor and software section of the aircraft is a snap-on assembly, the F-720 can be easily change from one mission to another.

UMS also produces a rotorcraft drone and you’ll see it in this video. Hoole offers some interesting observations on the issue of drones, their usefulness, and what the future holds in store. This video provides an insight to a specific business and product, but it also lets us look to the future through the eyes of a manufacturer.
