V-22 Final Testing Underway

You've Come A Long Way, Baby

The V-22 Osprey tiltrotor program, once near death after evaulation accidents killed 23 Marines, is now undergoing final testing -- the last step before becoming an operational part of America's military air inventory.

It's a remarkable comeback for the revolutionary aircraft that takes off like a helicopter, but flies like a plane.

The Osprey was grounded after a couple of accidents in 2000 -- and was grounded briefly earlier this year for mechanical issues related to the chemical coating inside a crucial gearbox.

The current slate of tests is scheduled to run through June. At the end of that period, the military will decide whether the V-22 is ready for full production. The USMC has orders for 360 Ospreys. The Navy will buy 48 and the USAF 50 -- at a cost of about $40 million each.
