FedEx Pilots Handle Engine Fire Professionally And Safely

Return To Newark Follows Bird Strike Shortly After Takeoff

A FedEx cargo aircraft experienced a bird strike followed by an engine fire shortly after departure from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in new Jersey. The pilots followed their training with skill and composure to safely conduct an emergency landing back at EWR.

Jose Nieves, Chair of the FedEx Master Executive Council said, “This incident underscores the unwavering professionalism and expertise of FedEx pilots, who consistently rise to the occasion in the face of unforeseen challenges. Their commitment to safety and operational excellence ensures the reliability of FedEx services worldwide.”

The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) commented on the incident and noted other instances where FedEx pilots demonstrated outstanding professionalism, training, composure, and skill.

Some of those include:

  • February 2023, when a FedEx crew averted a near-collision at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and narrowly avoiding impact with a Southwest Airlines plane on the runway due to their training and rapid decision-making
  • October 2023, a FedEx Boeing 757 made a successful landing at Chattanooga Airport after its landing gear failed to deploy in a testament to the pilots’ adept handling of in-flight emergencies.

ALPA said, “These crews exemplify the talent, professionalism, and dedication to safety for which FedEx pilots are known globally. They demonstrated significant operational resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic response that saved many lives and managed a subsequent system form and culture change resulting from the implementation of a new corporate business strategy.”

Nieves added., “I applaud our pilots’ actions. This incident once again highlights why the most crucial factor in aviation safety is having two highly trained and qualified pilots on the flight deck.”
