Delaying JSF Could Save Nearly $7 Billion

Pentagon Says Incresing Development Phase Will Save Money In The Long Run

The Pentagon announced Thursday that the expected one-year delay in deploying the F-35 would eventually save the government about $6.9 billion, according to an e-mail from the DoD's military programs office and reported by Bloomberg News.

The Pentagon says the cause of the delays is a "still maturing" final assembly process on the part of prime contractor Lockheed Martin. The company had no immediate comment on the e-mail.

DoD expects to increase the development phase by $4.6 billion, but still expects nearly $7 billion to be returned to the various branches of the military between 2012 and 2016.

The number of aircraft requested for next year also fell from 45 to 32. The requests for out years have been similarly reduced.
