Japan In Talks To Develop Military Utility Helo

Aircraft Would Be Used Domestically And Exported

Japan has initiated talks with prominent helicopter manufacturers and their partners in that country that could eventually lead to a new Japanese military utility helicopter.

The aircraft would also be marketed for export, signalling a further easing of Japan's long-standing restrictions on military exports put in place following WWII.

Reuters reports that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been working on making it easier for the country to develop military hardware for export as a way to bring down its domestic defense procurement costs.

The project, which has been named "UH-X", would develop an aircraft to replace Japan's aging fleet of Bell UH-1 Huey helos. The development project is expected to cost some $2 billion.

Companies involved in the talks with Japan include Airbus Helicopters, Bell, AgustaWestland, and Fuji Heavy Industries.
