Yonkers, NY Votes To Ban Heliports

Company Had Proposed Numerous Sightseeing Flights To The Statue Of Liberty

The Yonkers City Council found a way to prevent multiple helicopter flights per hour to and from the Statue of Liberty; they voted to ban heliports in the community.

In a unanimous 7-0 vote, the council voted to ban the construction of a heliport on property in an industrial zone between the Domino Sugar refinery and the county sewage plant. The vote was aimed directly at preventing Helicopter Flight Services from establishing a helicopter tourism company that had proposed operating three to five flight per hour between 0900 and 2100 to the Statue of Liberty, according to The Journal News.

Cable news channel FiOS 1 reports that the council left open the possibility of a heliport being allowed by special exception for medical emergency services, or if a large company needing helicopter transportation were to move into the city.
