Lawsuit Over Baseball Cards Destroyed In 2009 Accident Settled

Sports Memorabilia Collection Included 10 Mickey Mantle Rookie Cards

One of the passengers that was fatally injured in the Continental Connection Flight 3407 accident in 2009 was 60-year-old Douglas Wielinski, who was traveling with a sports memorabilia collection reportedly valued at about $2.4 million dollars.

The collection was destroyed in the accident. It included 10 rare 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie cards worth an estimated $25,000 each.

Wielinski's estate sued the airline over the cards, which were not recovered following the accident. Even without physical evidence they were on board the plane, a vendor testified that Wielenski had showed him the cards at a market.

Now, CBS Sports reports that the suit has been settled for an undisclosed amount described as "unprecedented in Western New York" by the Wielenski family attorney.
