American Airlines Pilot Reports Near-Collision With UAV

Said He Saw Small Aircraft Near His Jetliner While Landing At Tallahassee, FL

The pilot of regional flight operating for American Airlines says he nearly collided with a UAV earlier this year while landing at Tallahassee, FL.

The pilot was not named. Reuters reports that FAA Unmanned Aircraft System Integration Office manager Jim Williams said at an industry conference that "[t]he airplane pilot said that the UAS was so close to his jet that he was sure he had collided with it."

The airplane was inspected after landing, and did not appear to be damaged, but that does not lessen the urgency of the issue, Williams said. "The risk for a small UAS to be ingested into a passenger airline engine is very real. The results could be catastrophic," he said.

The incident occurred in March. A US Airways CRJ-200 was reportedly flying at about 2,300 feet about five miles from the airport when it encountered the UAV. The FAA said it investigated, but could not identify the operator of the unmanned aircraft.
