That Transcontinental Flight: Nuts and Bolts

We have some technical and peripheral information about last week's remarkable stories, which we're presenting here. [Thanks go to ANN Reader Michael R. Pablo, who is Assistant, Contest & Records, at the National Aeronautic Association, which certifies such records, and to Assaf Stoler, who provided us with the stats of the trip --ed.]

Michael wrote us, "The National Aeonautic Association sanctions and certifies all records set in the United States or by U.S. citizens. It is [the NAA] that will be approving their record, once all the supporting documentation has been submitted.

"After we approve a record as a U.S. National record, it is then sent to FAI in Switzerland for their approval as a world record. We will be sending FAI the paperwork for a record for 'Speed Over a Recognized Course' for Santa Ana to Kitty Hawk, but not for the Transcontinental record, which will be certified as a U.S. record only."

Assaf added, "Both pilots got their training, and regularly flew from Sunrise Aviation, at Orange County (CA) Airport." Here's how the record flight shook out, by the numbers:

  • Leg 1:
    Orange County Airport (SNA) to St. Johns Industrial (SJN).
    Distance 444NM, flight time 3:29hrs/min.
    SNA takeoff time 12:26 PST. SJN landing time 3:55pm PST.
    Ground time 30 min at SJN. SJN takeoff time 4:25pm PST
  • Leg 2:
    SJN to Amarillo Texas (AMA).
    Distance  380NM, flight time 2:50hrs.
    AMA Landing time 7:15 PST.
    Ground time 27min at AMA. AMA takeoff time 7:42pm PST.
  • Leg 3:
    AMA to Fort Smith (FSM), Arkansas.
    Distance 359NM, flight time 2:31hrs.
    FSM landing time 10:13pm PST.
    Ground time 32 min at FSM. FSM takeoff time 10:45pm PST.
  • Leg 4:
    FSM to Upper Cumberland Regional (SRB), Sparta, TN.
    Distance 433NM, flight time 3:20hrs/min.
    SRB landing time 2:05am PST.
    Ground time 25 min. SRB takeoff time 2:30am PST.
  • Leg 5:
    SRB to First Flight Airport (FFA).
    Distance  478NM. Flight time 3:20hrs/min.
    Over FFA time of crossing fix 5:50am PST.
