Hartzell Buys E-MAG, Adds Electronic Aircraft Ignitions

Engine Tech Unit Grows Portfolio Offerings

Hartzell Engine Tech, a unit of Hartzell Aviation, announced the acquisition of E-MAG, maker of aircraft electronic ignition systems that are lightweight, reliable, and provide longer engine lifespans, improved starting, and smooth idle.

Hartzell Engine Tech intends to obtain certification for the General Aviation market for the E-MAG products to enable offering them as easily installed replacements that do not require external, backup power or power conditioners for continued operation.

Lycoming, Continental Titan, and Superior Air Parts also offer E-MAG factory options.

Keith Bagley, President of Hartzell Engine Tech said, “While our traditional mechanical magnetos will be around for a long time, Hartzell Engine Tech acquired E-MAG to expand its PowerUP Ignition System product portfolio into both the non-certified and certified markets.

“The self-powering, plug-and-play characteristic of the E-MAG design will soon be available for straightforward dual installations in the certified market as PMA products compatible with conventional aviation harnesses and spark plugs,” he added.

Brad Dement, founder and co-owner said, “We are excited that E-MAG is joining Hartzell Engine Tech and the Signia family of companies.”

Tom Carlson, the other founder and co-owner added, “The additional capabilities and resources of Hartzell Engine Tech will accelerate the E-MAG certification process.”

Dement and Carlson will assist Hartzell Engine Tech during the transition period. The E-MAG manufacturing and support activities will eventually be moved from Azle, Texas, to Hartzell Engine Tech’s base facility in Montgomery, Alabama.

With the acquisition, Hartzell Engine Tech grows its brand menu of engine components, accessories, and heating systems, which already includes PowerUP Ignition Systems, Janitrol Aero, Fuelcraft, Plane-Power, Sky-Tec, and AeroForce Turbocharger Systems. These brands provide engine solutions for the general aviation and military markets.

Hartzell Aviation is a business unit of Signia Aerospace.
