Airlines Cash In On Baghdad Flights

Much Needed Boost To Industry Sorely Damaged By War On Terror, SARS

The Pentagon has so far spent $1.2 billion dollars on commercial flights ferrying troops and equipment to Iraq. It's a sort of lifeline thrown to an industry battered by the war on terror and the SARS outbreak earlier this year.

The military says it split the money this way: Ten airlines shared $636.2 million to get troops to the battlefront between February and June. Another 14 cargo carriers got $574 million for the dangerous privilege of flying freight into the combat zone and neighboring countries during the same period.

The payments were made in accordance with the government's Civil Reserve Act, which allows the Pentagon to enlist private carriers in times of national emergency. It was only the second time since the law was enacted in 1951 that it had been exercised during war. The first time was more than a decade ago, when the allies ousted Saddam Hussein's troops from beleaguered Kuwait.
