USPA Will Raise Minimum Skydiving Age To 18

Change Affects First-Time Skydivers Effective May 1

People wanting to try skydiving for the first time will have to wait until they are 18 years old after May 1st, according to the U.S. Parachute Association.

Currently, teens under the age of 18 have been allowed to jump with parental consent. The Associated Press reports that USPA said through a spokesperson that the rule change was not a response to a recent accident in which a 16-year-old girl was seriously injured when her parachute malfunctioned. The teenager survived a 3,000 fall, and is recovering from her injuries.

USPA Spokesperson Nancy Koreen said in an email that the change has been under consideration for "a couple of years," and is an issue that the association has "been struggling with."

Koreen said skydiving manufacturers already restrict the use of their gear to those over 18. She said that move came in response to "an increasingly litigious society."
