USAF Says F-16 Accident Pilot Lost Consciousness Due To High G's

Jet Crashed During Training Exercise Out Of Luke AFB

Officials with the US Air Force said the pilot of an F-16C blacked out immediately before the fighter crashed in western Arizona in March.

According to the Air Force, investigators determined 2nd Lt. David Mitchell failed to properly compensate for high-g forces sustained during a dogfighting maneuver March 14.

Mitchell, 26, was killed upon impact. He was participating in a mock combat training exercise.

As ANN reported, the F-16 flew out of Luke Air Force base, the world's largest F-16 training site with about 185 aircraft. The jet impacted due south of Alamo Lake, a training range about 80 miles of the Phoenix metroplex.

Mitchell was a member of the Ohio Air National Guard, based in Toledo with the 180th Fighter Wing. He enlisted with the ANG in October 2001 as a jet engine mechanic, before earning his commission as an officer in 2006 and entering the flight training program.
